The Traveling Yogi goes to the Beach is an interactive children’s book that scientifically helps with bedtime routines for children ages 2-7. This is the first book released in the Traveling Yogi series! Each book in the series will be a fun journey
exploring a new location. The Children learn about that a place and the things found there. Each book brings them through a short yoga practice, with visualization and breathing techniques.
How does it work?
If you have a child who is very active right before bed who wants to jump, fall, roll, stretch, squeeze, push, etc - they are more than likely seeking proprioceptive input, simply defined as heavy work, which is calming to the nervous system.
Parents often want children to sit still to become calm as a preparation for bed, but children with high sensory thresholds usually often need more of this proprioceptive input in order to feel calm.
The sequence of poses in this children’s book is designed to first release the bursts of energy through “heavy work” positions, while gradually slowing down the breath and transitioning to relaxing floor poses. In this first book in the series children have fun on their journey to the beach as they walk like a crab, swim with a shark and tickle an octopus!
In the final poses, children are guided to close their eyes and experience calming visualizations, such as listening to distant thunder and curling up into a safe turtle shell.
As children learn new things every day and experience a large range of emotions. They can find themselves in stressful situations and can be unsure of how to process difficult feelings. The simple techniques in these books are important tools to help them navigate through life.
My name is Blair Barbour, aka Yogi Blair to my yoga students, and I have been an exhibiting artist and children’s yoga teacher for over ten years. I wrote, illustrated and designed this book based on the most popular and effective game played in my children’s yoga classes - The Traveling Yogi.
I based the character off of on my nephew who loved doing yoga with
me! The tools and techniques used in my classes are so effective for emotional well being, behavior balancing, and bedtime routines, that. It’s time to share these tools beyond the classroom.
Emotional awareness, empathy and self confidence are all learned within the first 7 years of life. The entire foundation of how you are going to handle future problems and make life choices is developed in during the early years. Within those 7 years we expect them to follow ALL of “the” rules, understand how to process and deal with an array of emotions, learn how to stay alive and avoid danger, show gratitude, care for others, eat their broccoli and grow into confident, happy, healthy human beings.
Raising a child is one of the biggest responsibilities a person can undertake AND
these techniques can help. Our goals are to help parents create a foundation of confidence, creativity, empathy, appreciation and problem solving with proven tools and techniques.
