The Kodiak queen is part of a series of paintings of five locations in the British Virgin Islands. I lived in the Virgin Islands for five years and created these paintings the style of vintage travel posters from the 50s. I wanted to bring to capture some of my favorite places from my time there in the style from one of my favorite eras. The Kodiak Queen was a ship that survived the attack on Pearl Harbour and was going to be demolished. Richard Branson, not wanting to allow such a beautiful piece of American History to be lost to scraps, found a way to keep the Kodiak Queen available to the public while also building a new reef for the local fish. His team of Artists, carved holes in the side, added art installations on the inside of the ship, and built a giant Kraken on the exterior where divers could swim through the tentacles. Unfortunately when I dove the Kodiak Queen the Kraken has been damaged by Hurricanes, but the interior was so fun to explore. It had rooms where you could sit at a desk with a laptop pretending to be working remotely, they had a table with a bottle of wine and a glass to "drink" from, and an underwater phone to call Poseidon. The BVI is full of fun surprises.
